Gasket Repair
I have replaced gaskets on a wide range of manufacturers; Bomber Gear, Kokatat, NRS, Palm, Stohlquist, and IR. If you don't have the technical skills, the proper forms, don't want glue in your hair, or just don't have the time, I will be happy to replace the gaskets and guarantee the repair for 1 year.
It's always a good idea to check your gaskets often for signs of wear such as cracking on the cuff, dry rotted cracks along the base, or latex that is gummy and weak. Coating the gaskets with 303 is also a good idea for long gasket life, it also makes the gaskets slip on easier. Nothing is worse than showing up at your favorite creek at a prime level, only to pull your dry gear out of your bag and find the wrist, ankle, or neck gasket is ripped or has stuck itself together. Duck tape works well for making it happen that day, but is only a temporary fix. Then you are faced with performing the repairs or purchasing new gear. In the green era that we are in, reusing is one of the greenest, and most cost effective solutions to this problem. If the fabric of your gear is in good condition, replacing failed gaskets is a great solution to the problem. I recommend replacing all the gaskets as as set, they were made and installed at the same time, they all have faced the same enviromental conditions, and have more than likely worn in the same manner. The exception would be a tragic accident involving coat hangers, keys, or finger nails, Which has happened on many occasions. Performing the repairs yourself will save you money, but having a top quaility repair is key to getting a dry seal and it is easy to get very messy the first couple times you attempt these repairs. Here is a video detailing how to perform a neck gasket repair by Rick at BomberGear.
It's 2012, fix your gear before the world ends and remember the one with the most toys at the end wins... |
